I've inherited the character registry database for WI and I'm looking at older items with some puzzlement. I'm curious about older rules versions and bluebooks.

What versions of the rules have been used, and what year were they published/used? Is it possible to get older versions of the rules?

7.0 - 2009
6.8 - 1998?
6.5 - Before 97 since the Bluebook 97 references this version
Revised 6th - 1989

Same thing for Bluebooks... and does anyone have copies of older bluebooks?
Bluebook 09 (soon)
Bluebook 97

Check with the D/B Archivist, Bret Halford.
He has lots of flotsom and jetsom.
He's on the D/B who's who or check the any Melee for his email and mine.

I have various copies of older rules and bluebooks, going back to when I started in 1987.
But it's all in hard copy, not online and most is just my personal copies.

For rules, there was
various loose leaf stuff before 1987.
6th edition,  May 15, 1987.
6th edition, revised, April 1989.
Experimental Rules, version 1, 2, 3.1  (only some games were run under these rules)
Version 3.1 was fairly close to 6.5.  Life Spark was introduced in the experimental rules.
Version 6.5  May 1994
Version 6.8 1998
Version 6.97 - playtest version of the 7.0 rules
Version 7.0 2009

For Bluebooks, before 1990, there were various proposals, but nothing
comprehensive.  Traceable from the first complete Bluebook, I have in front of me:
April 9, 1991 -- first version recommended by Bluebook Committee to Society Board
   for general use
5-6-93 -- revised for use with experimental rules 3.1 and later (BlueBook Task Force)
1-11-95 -- draft, for review and use with 6.5 rules  (BlueBook Task Force)
Version 1996 -- for use with 6.5 rules (Society Sanctioning Committee)
Version 1997 -- for use with 6.5 rules (Society Sanctioning Committee)
Newest Bluebook for use with 7.0 rules -- available from SSC real soon now
(complete drafts are floating around, with final review/changes being made)

Before 1997, many items were invented without much reference to either the rules or the Bluebook.  If you post item descriptions, some of us who've been around a while could  speculate on what the intended item was supposed to be.  No guareentees though, as some items were very poorly sanctioned, assigning a nominal value to an item which clearly were worth a lot more.  Rings of Spell Storing are an example that first came out of Norman for give-away prices. Once they got priced to reflect their value, noone gave them out any more.  For extreme items, sometimes the best choice is to ask the item owner to suggest a reasonable resanctioning of the item so that it's power is appropriate to its cost while retaining some of its roleplaying flavor.
